I'm Present During My Absence

Long-time no blog. I apologise for those that have been on the lookout for any 2019 updates only to not receive any unless you of course check out my Twitter page. Although I'm not the biggest fan of social media I have come to appreciate Twitter and LinkedIn (that I haven't been able to log onto since last year funnily enough) but you really should follow me via @LK_ReelDeevah if regularity on updates, activity and connectivity is what you seek from a professionally friendly stand point.

The past 7 months have been interesting, difficult, confusing, enlightening, somewhat exciting and all other adjectives that left me in deep thought with the need to distance myself. In many ways I have been on my own island, in a much needed reclusive state of mind to indeed exercise my mindfulness. This just means that as a consequence of many events and reflection, I have been making firmer choices to focus on myself more in a healthier holistic way.

However, despite my noticeable absence and sporadic appearances in regard to self-promotion, online activity and social circles. I have in many ways still been very present. My eye is not off the ball, it's just that my interests and priorities have changed- for the better. It goes without saying that I have still been working all this time, developing my projects and what have you. Furthermore my greeting cards continue to push the bar and celebratory emotions. Some of my recent creations have been very 'wordy' pun intended.

These are two designs in particular that I have had in mind for a couple of years and have only just had the right opportunity to be unleashed. I just didn't expect them to be made around the same time however I can't control the costumers needs- that I'm happy to meet. Outside of the orders I receive, I am making a few more cards that will be featured in something that I am working on.

What I have really been excelling at though, excelling as far as baby steps go, is cake decorating! You don't understand, this means the world to me as I have been wanting this forever, before wanting to pursue film, publishing and even before I went to culinary school. It all felt so far out of reach that I would only bake and cake decorate vicariously through television shows like Cake Boss and Cupcake Wars. I began pushing my love for cake decorating with my dessert table designs via my events company. I was just testing the waters as making dessert tables was the best excuse for that creative side of me to finally go into action.

My designs completely outdid my baking I must say, although it was the perfect opportunity to improve on my cake decorating skills regardless of how minimal. To learn to bake properly and make delightful glorious cakes and pastries has long and I mean like 25yrs long, been a dream of mine. I will make that happen dammit. More of that and my foodie experiences can be seen on my beloved  Deevah's Cravings blog. My food writing hasn't been on hiatus during this time, as food is another kind of joy that will demand attention and dedication from me more so. On that blog you'll find food stories and food porn to salivate over.

The best thing that I've been doing this year and what I've been most excited about is my reignited writing of poetry FOR ME. For the past five years, I have had off and on writing blocks when it came to writing or completing poems spontaneously or just for the fun of it. This also goes for writing stories, my food novel and old incomplete scripts that were and are of great importance to me. In turn, without fully realising it at the time I have dedicated that passion and motivation to writing for others and completing other written projects under commission.

This in some ways was good because it brought in business nonetheless and made customers happy which made me happy, but the huge problem that followed was the inevitable pile up of missed out opportunities and unfinished, un-started things that I wanted to achieve personally! That was driving me mad. My sh*t kept falling into the back burner for more new sh*t that meant less to me. Although I managed to get the odd thing done on that list, the reality is that years were going by of unmet goals or unmet needs of personal creative expression. This can devastate an Artist or any type of creative individual who just wants to create any and everything that comes to mind, especially when you're passionate about it.

I am glad to say that, that self-imposed dilemma is becoming no more and it feels wonderful. Dec-Jan in particular I wrote 3 new poems out of the blue AND TO COMPLETION! That meant everything to me. One of them I performed at She Grrrowls. I have noticed a little pattern in my recent poems; Dec-Jun although they are all different there's a theme they share between them being that of lifestyle, loss, desires, children, opinions and mother-daughter relationships. The content has been quite vulnerable whether I'm speaking my truth or that of someone else's. The ones involving parenting and family dynamic banter isn't even from my perspective, such as many things that I have come to write they simply came from a source of observation and passiveness.

My poems are also getting increasingly longer which I didn't even think was possible as I am known to have long poems anyway (not the longest ever heard but I am known to write in excess). It hurts my hands while doing so but while I'm writing or typing I'm saying to myself "I just need to get this sh*t out!" That is also one of the many benefits of getting back to writing for the sake of saying what I want to say even if it's just for my eyes and ears only, is that I do not need to concern myself with cutting it down to make it shorter or more comfortable for others. I can just do me and lessen the anxiety of people-pleasing, which again feels wonderful.

This week I wrote a poem about falling out of love with Haribo sweets, for those that know me they know that one hits home as also seen on my food blog. The loss is real, quite a humorous yet relatable piece. I look forward to performing that one and two more out of the 7-8 poems written so far in the near future. As a Poet it is natural for me to write with a performance in mind or the thought of it being read by someone, however such as with this blog entry that has been a bit of an obstacle to complete, I have to bear in mind my friend's wise words "Not everything needs to be shared." With that said, I know to keep some things to myself in both regard to what I could add to this post and what I have written in my new poems. At the end of the day I wrote those for me for therapeutic reasons and therefore consider them to be private diary entries. What I will share will be intriguing nevertheless don't get it twisted ;-)

Until then, wish me baking progress and more continued success with my mindfulness journey. I wish everyone, even more so my loyal supporters and anyone going through heavy things that are making you anxious or unhappy, more and more brighter days.

Upcoming Valentine's Shows

Naturally I'll be performing throughout the month of Valentine's, not just to promote my book which was made for it but because it is just a joy to do so. This is my favourite festive season as I have expressed before. It is the guaranteed time of when love is truly in the air- romance anyway, even with all the cynics that try to suppress it, it is a nice time to experience and observe for me (in regard to both my love life and that other others around me).

In comparison to other celebrations like Easter, Christmas or Halloween these ones often make the best shows to go to and perform at as everyone is coming with positivity. Furthermore, as it is not necessarily a religious or patriotic celebration most people can relate the theme of love, relationships and just enjoy. I'm all for it and can't wait to serenade the **** out of audiences with my specially selected poems.

Some of the events are ones that I have performed at in the past (with different material) and have been welcomed back to. Below are the dates that practically look like a tour but it's not, I just happen to be high in demand this time of year. As is with the seasonal sales of my Custom Poetry Greeting Cards™ that I feel so privileged to be chosen for each time! Come to a show and enjoy yourself with the sounds of Musicians, Poets and other Artists!

4th Feb  2-4pm  Unplugged
12th Feb  8-10:30pm  Fusion of the Arts
14th Feb 7pm-12am  City Link Up
22nd Feb  7:30-10pm  Black Heroes Soul CafĂ©
23rd Feb  7:30-11pm Once Upon A Mic

Follow the links highlighted above for more details and follow me on Twitter to keep up with my performances, products and services.

Timing is everything people so I am giving you a polite reminder NOT to wait till the last minute to order one of my cards, as each detailed special creation takes ages to make- the intricacy in my passionate hard work is no joke! That's why they are completely worth the money ;-)

Update- Projects, Performances & Appearances

Hello my lovelies, I hope that you've had a nice weekend, mine was fabulous all throughout and I don't get to say that often so I am very pleased.

It is May already! Since my last blog post nearly 4 weeks ago, I was telling you about my upcoming performance at Beyond Words which is tomorrow 7pm for all my poetry lovers.

I'll be returning to ELR this weekend for their new radio show 'Inspirational East' 2pm Saturday 6th May, of which has me very intrigued. Tune into that live (online radio) if you can.

Additionally I'll be performing on the Live Entertainment stage of Well Street Market Saturday 3rd June. A market may seem quite unconventional or unexpected of me however, as long as it is positive I am willing to try new things and new environments of creativity. Even more so I like what this unique market does for their community and I'll like to work with them in the future. Come down, shop and be entertained!

Between the time I have been working hard as usual, writing and planning between THREE different books and the projects that surround them which includes the special edition of my last book, as well as a food book but I'll give more info about that nearer toward the time. All the while making my much adored cards and capitalising on my wedding services.

I know it seems excessive however, I do try cut down my workload but then that just leads to postponing current projects in mind for a later time and like most creative people I am concerned about the NOW. I want my vision to be created now, while I am still motivated and have a strategically timed plan in place, before I start thinking of new projects to work on- which is inevitable. It's all good ;-)

Needless to say orders for my products and services between my personal projects are unavoidable. I WELCOME THEM WITH OPEN ARMS and they pay my bills. Speaking of which, Father's Day is around the corner and it's someone's birthday everyday so seriously busy or not I am happy to make someone's day for you with one of my Custom Poetry Greeting Cards™. Look at what one of my happy customers posted on Facebook recently about my cards (I copied and pasted an extract of her comment):

"....... 110% creativity. Was touched that such a milestone was celebrated in a unique way. Her way with words is amazing. I'm fortunate to have experienced her passion for lighting up people's world using cards and poems whilst incorporating their life experiences. This thoughtful insight makes her cards and poems very much more than pen to paper. Fast forward 2.5 years my card is still displayed proudly on my mantlepiece and memories of her poems are at the forefront of my mind. Sheer and utter amazing!"
-K. Williams

It's all good, it's all good. With that said I am wishing everyone a good week and I hope that you can come and see or hear me perform at either of the above.

Updated Tour Dates

Plenty has gone on since my last post, some good things and some bad things (personally). Thankfully, many good things came out of the bad so I'll shut up in regard to that- for now. What I will say is; one of those bad things was me not being able to attend my scheduled performance at BAC a couple weeks ago which saddened me a great deal. This was because I had a sudden emergency that threw me off everything that I had lined up over the days that followed. Sh*t happens. The situation could have been much worse, I am beyond thankful for that not being the case and extremely thankful for all the assistance and concern from others at the time. I had a revelation that day of 'everything happens for a reason.'

Moving on, things are much better now and are returning to a calmer state where I can refocus my energy back into my work, while being smarter with it as oppose to just relentlessly working harder. I am continuing on with my book tour as it comes to an end (I don't really want it to end as I'm having too much fun!), finishing off the special edition of I'm All In and doing preparations for my next book. See the July listing in the updated book tour poster below, these include more performances and a radio interview. Please note that more dates will follow regarding August.

What is also great, is the new cards that I made recently which made the recipients VERY happy. Naturally it makes me VERY HAPPY in return. Images will be seen from those cards in my soon to be released newsletters, sign-up to mailing list to receive it. To find out more about my Custom Poetry Greetings Cards click here,

Latest Cards & My Rolls Royce

You know that 'Card Designer/Greeting Card Writer' is officially another title of mine right? If not just look at the page of where you'll find out how I came to be the founder of Custom Poetry Greeting Cards.

I love my card-making, it gives me the most joy. Even more so, it makes my customers and recipients very happy. Even family members and friends of mine compete with who has the best card made by me, who received one from me or who had the deepest poem! That can get overwhelming at times but it feels priceless.

Over the past 7-8 months I have made many Birthday cards which is predictable I guess, fewer Valentine's than last year but exciting nonetheless, a Congrats card and Christmas cards. The Christmas ones in particular were a lot of fun as I got to make use of some of the ideas that I had in mind for a long time, such as edible candy cane (really), a handmade stuffed stocking and the simplicity of drawing. I loved drawing as a child, always excelled in art at school. I suppose that goes without saying.

I would like to sharpen my illustration skills to a more professional level and add that in my cards more, right now I am just about confident enough to draw basic storyboards. By the way in regard to the Pisces card, I graphically designed and edited from images I found from other Artists. I will in no way claim that they are my original sketches or try to profit from them as such. Y'know what I'm getting really good at though? Doing freehand snowflakes. The snowflake Christmas card although very simple, is one of my favourites cards and it looks so pretty under certain lighting.

Believe or not those are real handcuffs sewn into this big sized card. Yep, very daring I know but was great for what I needed them for (card-making wise) although turned out to be heavier than expected. This adult humour card was a part of my Valentine's range and the poem inside can also be found in my poetry book that I encourage you to purchase so that you can enjoy reading that poem or dedicate to someone in your own time.

Despite that my handmade designs are popular and aesthetically pleasing, not all of my cards are handmade as you may have noticed. What I have noticed with my audience and customers is that they care for the poems I write for them much more. I often get told that I "speak to them" and fully understood what they felt and were trying to say, and this is after having read the 2nd or 3rd draft to them before even getting to the design. I am not complaining one bit, I feel honoured! That feedback humbles me and elates me as a Writer. My customers being happy and impressed by my skills, passion and dedication for my art- in both its forms in this case, it just doesn't get any better than that for me. Payment goes a long way too of course ;-)

For those that would not catch onto the logo reference of the cosmetics brand Motive, I included it so that it would make sense. This was for a 30th birthday card that was very enjoyable to make, especially when selecting the pictures representing childhood to adulthood in the inside covers of the card. The reason for the brand association is simply because the recipient works with the brand, so it had a personal meaning.

Now for what I have been saving as my masterpiece, what I call "My Rolls Royce of cards" so far and is currently the centerpiece on my living room stand.........

Do you recognise it? I gather that you've clicked on by now but if you haven't it is a direct representation of my book! I went all in with the book and went further in with this card oh my days. A friend of mine pointed out to me two birthday's ago that I should make a card for myself since there wouldn't be anyone to make or buy the kind of cards that I make, for me as a gift. He was right so since then I decided to make cards for myself on special occasions. I want to feel the way my customers/recipients feel too!

Furthermore, no one got me a Congrats card or physical gift like flowers or what have you after I published my book, not even at my launch party which was a downer so I have learned that it's best that I just gift myself. To be clear, I did get a 'Congrats' gift of some sort as it was monetary and very much appreciated but I do love my cards and keepsakes that's all I am saying. So with this card, I was killing 2 birds with 1 stone by making it a Congrats + B'day card and reflection of my writing achievements the past year. I had a reason to be proud as well as a reason to celebrate.

I knew that I wanted the card to represented the book and overall theme of the book which is Alice In Wonderland, so I designed the inside to have individual playing cards (seriously) that spelt out the words 'Just Published'! The inside cover looked like the flaps of my hardback book with my photo and bio, but the butter on my cracker was the glass with dice in it just as designed on my book cover. As the glass is my favourite part of the book cover that was an original design of mine, having this as a focal point in this card (literally in not on) design meant the world to me.

I hunted down disposable champagne glasses but none matched the shape and size required, fortunately I had some left over disposable wine glasses from a fundraising event I organised some years ago (nothing goes to waste) and IT DID THE DAMN THANG. Making the miniature cards and putting the 'glass' cup in place was a mission, like I said I broke a sweat but man was it worth-it. I smile everytime I look at it or spin the mini cards round. Fabulous.

Nothing can top that one for the time being however, I'm currently working on a couple milestone birthday cards at the moment which I always find exciting to indulge in so I can't wait to finish them. One of these cards is very special to me and may very well be the "Bentley to my Rolls" or more than, we'll see.

I can't deny that there is a theme of red in the above images, not intentional however colours used for Xmas and V. day are typically going to be dominantly red, with black, white and green. I had an alternative colour scheme for one of the Xmas cards I made last year that I adored but cannot show it to you "sorry." There is more that I would also love to show off but some of my cards are private for the sake of my customers.

Tis' the coming time of Father's Day and Congratulations will soon be in order for exams, driving tests and graduation, of course Wedding season is also upon us (I write vowels too by the way as also seen in my book). My versatility also stretches to appropriate and comforting words of Condolences, comfort and encouragement for Cancer Survivors, as well as Get Well cards and sentimental notes (poems) to say Miss You, Thank You's or any personal feelings of communication that you would like to have in a custom card, I am here!

World Poetry Day 2016

I have never seen so much appreciation for the art and literature of poetry as I see today. World Poetry Day and National Poetry Day, although both old (ish) now, only came to my attention the last couple of years due to its popularity. I'll gladly celebrate World Poetry Day today as a Poet, as an Author of poetry, a lover of poetry and because poetry is my lover, period. I wrote a poem some years ago to prove that last point, as will be featured in my next book.

In celebration of this day I encourage you to indulge in my poetry products whether it be my Custom Poetry Greetings Cards™, my book or my performances (including bookings).

Love poetry!

How I Worked My Stall

I got exactly what I wanted regarding having a stall or exhibition stand at events to promote my book and card services post book launch. No complaints here, especially since I made a book sale within 5 minutes of my arrival of my very first stall experience- who gets to say that?!

The stand (stall table area) itself was half the size that it was advertised to me as being but as it was offered as opposed to bought I just worked with it and made the best out of the situation. I have worked with many people in the past at various events and on various types of projects so I know to anticipate these things and prepare for a contingency.

Bear in mind that I spent nearly 48 hours learning and achieving to make fondant roses for my cupcakes that was meant to compliment my stand as I had slightly achieved with the theme for my book launch. Not only did most of my beautiful sugar roses get crushed in the box I carried them in but the few good one's remaining did not get the exhibition they deserved because the table was so small that it could not fit a cupcake stand. That effort went to waste but at least I can add that to my food blog so not all is lost there.

Many thanks to those who came out to support like you said you would, every sale counts! And to those who came up to my stand to see my cards, check out my book and complimented my designs and poems. I also appreciate the networking Entrepreneurs who came up to me, particularly after my performance, to speak about potential opportunities.

I networked plenty as one would do at such events. Clearly, I now have to top up my stock of flyers, it's all good. In the past I have pitched and sold things, organised and hosted events but to host your own stand and practically sell yourself per se (brand and products that reflect you) while trying to grab people's interest and attention in a surrounding of competition, is a different ball game and quite the challenge at the end of the day.

Anytime I go to an expo, fair, festival, market place or even anytime I see a Charity Rep stopping people on the street, I admire the patience and stamina in the Sales Rep/Sole Trader that stand around or walk about all day trying to engage strangers in order to sell something. This is done with the anticipation of rejection after their pitch or to just be blatantly ignored from the beginning. I did not think that I had it in me to participate. Needless to say, my respect for those hard working, persistent people has grown. It is not the most fun job in the world but it can feel very rewarding especially when it is for your own products. If you are not selling you are at least marketing yourself. I was fortunate to do both on this occasion and I'm proud.

One of the best parts of the day other than the sales was when a friend of mine texted me early in the morning to see if I needed any assistance with my stand and that was such a life saver as that is exactly what I needed. He helped, we did what we set out to do, I was not overwhelmed and all was well. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

You can order my poetry book I'm All In in time for Christmas on Lulu or Shop Infiniti. If you want just a taste of my poetry, written especially for you instead a book written for others then you can order one of my Custom Poetry Greeting Cards™ on Shop Infiniti also.

Look out for future stalls and performances from me via my twitter updates @LK_ReelDeevah

For Father's

There is something incredibly sexy about the loving visual of a man with his children, many women agree and I am sure that many men have used that to their advantage not that I blame them. It is enduring and just simply adorable, but as a fellow Poet Prentice Powell made his point in his video 'Good Father,' this should not be praised as he is just doing what he should be doing. True, however as life has it, it is debatably uncommon to see loving, responsible, consistent relationships between men and their children. Which only makes it that much more appealing and inevitable of praise when we do see it.

I wish it was the norm but it's not, I am glad to have noticed and witnessed an increase in fathers (single dads as well as dads within an unbroken home) holding hands with their children, playing with their children, holding the baby or pushing the pram while going about their day. I didn't see much of this growing up so I am loving all this. I hope the trend continues which is interesting considering the changes and current debates of modern society.

Side note; I nearly fell off my chair when I was watching Mob Wives and I saw Drita's incarcerated husband call up in the evening to do his daughter's homework with her over the phone!! I know that many children particularly boys, have lost out on having a relationship with their dad due to incarceration but what I saw on Mob Wives just showed that it is down to the responsibility of the individual to beat the odds in such situations as opposed to just allowing you and your family to suffer from it and that was beautiful to me.

I was really bothered a couple of weeks ago at the fact that leading up to Mother's Day I had tons of enquiries and orders for Mother's Day cards and yet leading up to Father's Day I had practically no orders! This was a concern of social ethics as opposed to profit. I know there are some good fathers out there that are deserving of a special gift such as what I have to offer with my Custom Poetry Greeting Cards. I can actually think of some friends of mine who would be ideal recipients due to their admirable 'hands on' parenting. It is a damn shame that the unquestionable difference in the customer behaviour that I have observed is merely a social reflection of most people's relationship with their fathers, if any relationship at all. This bothered me so much that I voiced my opinion on Facebook while giving a shout out to some of those male friends of mine that I admire.

I will not deny that many men have been absent or flat out deplorable as parents however, I have met some wonderful men that are the complete opposite. I personally know men that have raised children that weren't even theirs, lovingly as if they were their own. I also know of some men that have voluntarily been a father figure to children within their communities, uncle's that have taken on a commendable father role to their nephews and nieces and even godfathers that have more than taken their role seriously.

Men seem to automatically have a bad reputation as parents and guardians due to the negligent actions of many men prior, so it is easy for fathers to get ignored on the larger scale of things or have people be quick to bash as oppose to praise but I would like to praise all the good dads out there. I wish that the paternal instinct was stronger in general or that effort in relationships from father to child/child to father were stronger but that is just not within my power. However, what I can do is encourage it like I am doing right now.

Another person encouraging this or least trying to give young men a positive experience of a father figure is Comedian and Host Steve Harvey. He actually has a Father's Day weekend that I heard of where he runs a mentoring programme (spelt as 'program' for my American readers) for fatherless young Black men and takes them to Disney World, something like that. Check his website for more information, hopefully it'll take place this year and continue to thrive as a foundation and initiative. If you really want to have an idea of what his children think of him as a dad watch this tear-jerking video clip.

If you have a father figure in your life who you happen to have a good relationship with and would like to let them know how much that means to you then show it! It is important to say and show someone how much you value them. As much as some people think that celebrations such as Father's Day or Mother's Day are unnecessary, they so serve a good purpose. For some parents it is the only time that they can expect to be spoiled per se by their children or even spend quality time with them.

The greatness of my Custom Poetry Greeting Cards is the impact that it has on the recipients. It comes totally unexpected to them as it is an unusual gift therefore, I would suggest a sentimental, fun, loving card custom made by yours truly. Then again in saying that, not all men appreciate cards so if you don't think that your recipient will then that's ok all is not lost. Alternatively, just remember that the best things in life are FREE and there is really no better gift than just giving your time and attention.

If you are in London and stuck on where to take your father or father figure for a nice day together, then here is another little something; 'Father's Fun Day Out' which is a family event taking place Sunday 21st June 2015 1pm-6pm at Poplar Grove Community Centre, Wembley, Middlesex HA9 9DB.
